Social Work Intern

Position Title: Social Work Intern
Responsible to: Emergency Services Director
Status: Volunteer
Position Summary
This position provides the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in a non-profit organization in the area of Emergency Services. The student will receive training to serve families affected by disasters and Armed Forces Emergency Services in areas of mitigation/planning, response and recovery from natural and manmade disasters. The student will provide support for the Emergency Services Department and be taking an active role in the development of disaster response plans and updating community resource information.
Major Responsibilities:
1. Work with Emergency Services Director in rewriting Disaster Response Plan, including annexes for nine county service delivery areas.
2. Provide direct client assistance to families of disaster and Armed Forces Emergency Services. This may occur in the office or in the field.
3. Complete client intake, assessment, documentation, planning and follow up.
4. Maintain computer based tracking tools for department statistics.
5. Maintain files and data base for tracking of volunteer resources and their training.
6. Prepare and coordinate materials for various projects
7. Participate in emergency management committee meetings involving local community partners such as Emergency Management, Fire Department, Health Department, counseling agencies, Division of Senior Services, etc.
8. Commitment to the Red Cross mission and practice of Core Values and Behaviors
Education/Experience:
1. One or two years of college level coursework.
2. Education in client assistance, intake and referral, community planning.
Skills/Abilities:
1. Strong written and verbal interpersonal skills.
2. Strong organizational and planning skills.
3. Detailed-oriented
4. Strong computer skills in word processing and working with data bases.
5. Must have excellent character, professional appearance and ability to work effectively as a team member.
Terms of Internship
1. Volunteer, Un-paid position
2. Part-time position, flexible with school schedule.
