Position Title: Communications and Development Intern
Responsible to: Development Specialist
Status: Volunteer
Position Summary:
Primary responsibilities of this position include support to the development specialist in areas such as media communication, event planning and research. Duties also include support of development office activities and tasks often vary upon demand.
Major Responsibilities
1. Coordinate media mailings / faxing / e-mails
2. Assist in answering and making phone calls
3. Special event planning and management
4. Maintain and update web-site using Front Page
5. research and construct press releases, articles and news stories
6. Assist in the design of printing materials
7. Copy and edit materials
8. Maintain a media contact database
9. Assist in the placement of ad’s and PSA’s
10. Proofread and adjust written materials
11. Develop speeches for certain events
Skills / Abilities
1. Effective writing skills
2. Organized and a close attention to detail
3. Ability to multi-task
4. familiar with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel)
5. good listener, ability to take directions and complete tasks
6. Ability to use creativity in all aspects of the position
7. Strong desire to learn
8. Commitment to the mission of the American Red Cross and practice of Core Values and Behaviors
9. Skills to use a computer and adaptability to learn new programs
10. General knowledge of formal business communication
Knowledge: Education and Training
1. One or two years of college level coursework.
2. Education in client assistance, intake and referral, community planning.

Terms of Internship
1. Volunteer, unpaid position
2. Part time, flexible with school schedule
